60 seconds with Liam O'Driscoll

The hard hitting all-rounder has been a great addition to the club. Now it’s time to learn more about the man who is more than just a pretty face.

OD great to have you at the Midd, how did you end up here?

I moved to London in August and was looking for a club to join. My mate Joe 'the camel' Hewton who plays at the Midd showed me the light

What has your cricketing career entailed so far?

Being a notorious jazz cricket enthusiast, I've represented quite a few jazz teams (MCC, Free Foresters, Gentlemen of Worcester etc) over the years. The sort of teams Joel Hughes might not be allowed into. Other than that: schoolboy cricket at RGS Worcester; University cricket at Cambridge and Birmingham; Club cricket at Worcester Nomads.

How does the Middlesex league/standard compare?

The Surrey league... (sausage!) is a decent step up from the Worcester league where I used to play. I reckon the standard is pretty similar to the MCC university cricket I played at Cambridge.

What things have you liked at North Midd and what would you like to see more of?

I've enjoyed the friendly welcome I've received at the Midd so thanks everyone for that. Turning up to the ground and seeing the place packed with juniors is great. The standard of training and depth of the squad is also very good. I would very much like to see more of the sausage game being played (happy to explain to anyone)

What are your hopes for the summer?

Try and cement down a position in the 1st XI and help us win a few games of cricket. At some point I would also like to get a run or two on the off side. Birdy has kindly been giving me some back lift tips to help with this

Please tell the aspiring juniors how you swing the ball both ways with such control?

I think the key to swing bowling is the wrist position: cocked back for the out-swinger; slightly further forward and firmer for the in-swinger. If you get the wrist right and bowl with a reasonably high arm then there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to swing it both ways. The other important thing to do is bring a ball to training that swings!

What’s your top score?

194

Where did you go to university?

Cambridge for my first degree and liked it so much did a second one at Birmingham. Having said that, the novelty had begun to wear off after the 9th freshers' week

What do you do for work?

Doctor

What else do you like apart from cricket?

Golf, rugby, the crystal maze, brunch, beer, cats and puns

Cheers Liam, top man. Go well this weekend.
