From the 5th XI Leadership Team:
Because of the Pandemic there were no league matches for the 5s in 2020. Instead, we arranged a programme of 8 friendly fixtures of which 1 was sadly rained off. The focus was on giving young players their first taste of mixed age cricket and we often had 6 or more U15s in the team. Of the 6 games played 1 was abandoned, we won 2 and lost 3.
Highlights included an unbeaten 100 from Guy Grainger against Highgate before the rains came and 70 for Sam Masud v North London. 5 wicket hauls for Mingus Clark v Brondesbury (his first senior 5 wicket haulin senior cricket) and Simon Richards v Hornsey. A couple of 3fers for Danny Francis bowling his off spin with another spinner, Jasper Sydenham, also showing promise in his first senior matches. Charles Martland batted extremely well when his other commitments allowed him to play, hitting a lovely 50 against Highgate and 2 or 3 30s in other games. Superb partnerships between Adam Frais (51 not out) first with Steve Phillips and then with Shayaan Calcutawalla set up the victory against Brondesbury after another debutante, Alfie Allen, had taken 3 Brondesbury wickets with his seamers.
This season, we will be selecting a captain week by week. The intention, as always in the 5s is to combine experienced players together with giving our juniors experience of senior cricket.
Up the Midd!
